Working in Groups - Please read    Posted: Feb 28, 2008
I have received numerous emails from students stating that they are getting little to no response from their team members or that their suggestions, comments, etc. are going unacknowledged by others. Please be considerate of others and let them know when you receive their work, read their discussion board postings, or even when they send an email. I had the understanding that most groups agreed on the best way to communicate for their team earlier in the quarter. I also ask that you check your email and discussion boards regularly to be sure you don't miss any vital group communication. While I understand the frustration many of you are feeling with group work in an on-line enviornment, I want to assure you that more projects have been successes than failures that have been completed this way and somehow, most students are able to work through the hurdles. Hang in there and "talk" to each other! Even though it may appear that your team members weren't involved in the begi

Assignments Turned in Late    Posted: Feb 25, 2008
I have been working for most of the day getting caught up with grading of assignments that may have been completed past the deadline. If you have submitted work for grading through Chapter 7, but your grade hasn't been recorded in your gradebook, please let me know as soon as possible so I can take care of it. Thank you.

Chapter 8 Assignment    Posted: Feb 25, 2008
Thanks to one of your fellow students, I discovered the problem with accessing the Chapter 8 Assignment and have fixed the error. Because of my error, you will have until the 28th to complete this assignment. Please let me know if any of you will need more time.

Chapter 6 Assignments    Posted: Feb 16, 2008
I have been working hard on grading your Chapter 6 assignments and have nearly completed posting all grades. Thank you all for your patience, I really appreciate it.

February 10th Assignments    Posted: Feb 13, 2008
I just wanted to provide you with a quick update. I have completed grading Chapters 4 and 5 and am currently working on Chapter 6's assignments. Again, I apologize for the lateness in completing the grading, but as most of you will see by my comments, I gave your answers a lot of consideration and wrote comments and suggestions for improving your assignments. If you have any questions, please send an email and I will do my best to respond in a timely manner. Thank you.

Gammar and Spelling Errors and Points Deducted    Posted: Jan 30, 2008
While I do not want to imply in any way that ALL students in this class need to proof-read their discussion questions and homework assignments, I do want to make some general announcements and things to look out for when submitting your assignments for grading. This list is in no particular order: Capitalize the first word of EVERY sentence. Capitalize the word "I". Learn the different between there and their and use the two appropriately. If using a contraction (Don't = do not), be sure to type in the apostrophe [dont is not acceptable for don't] The following words also need apostrophes - couldn't, wouldn't, shouldn't, isn't, can't and any other contraction. Use commas in the appropriate places. If unsure, try reading your work outloud and see where the natural pauses are. If you have not taken a composition class, see if the writing lab has resources you can use to improve your writing. I do apologize if in any way I sound upset, but I can't begin to tell you how muc

Group Work    Posted: Jan 23, 2008
In order to possibly eliminate some of the more common issues students have had working in groups, I offer the following: DO communicate with your team once often. DO share your contact information with your team; remember - it is everyone's responsibility to work on the group project. DON'T assume someone in your group will do all of the work. It is a TEAM effort. Even though group projects may not be your favorite method of completing assignments, group work is a way of life and you will be faced with the challenges that come with working with others for your entire professional career. With that said, make the best of it; pull your own weight; and get to know someone new. You just might find out that you have a lot in common with your teammates and hey, it might be fun! Note: A suggestion some of last quarter's teams had was to utilize the student homepages to assist you in doing your group project. See if you want to use them and give it a try.

Groups Formed and Discussion Boards for Your Use    Posted: Jan 23, 2008
I have formed your groups for your final paper and started discussion boards for each group to use. Most groups have 4 students just in the event a student or students drop the course and would only leave 1 or 2 students to do the project. I found that 4-person groups work better in the long run. Some groups last quarter used the student home page option to share information about themselves; you might also find them helpful. Groups are as follows: Group 1: Travis Armstrong Heather Elliott Jeremy Laughery Scott McKeever Group 2: Christina Ashcraft Laura Feyh Paul Leibrand Brenda Metzger Group 3: Craig Avery David Fogle (late registrant) Adam Lightle Ashley Mitchell Group 4: Bobbi Ford Kenney Long Julie Norton Tabetha Backus Group 5: Chris Belcher Shanna Hacker Jessica LoPiccolo Erica Pullins Group 6: Jennifer Bilka Tamarak Harris Tarah Lytle Katrina Raffensberger Group 7: Nichole Bradnan Scott Howard Garrett Martin Sarah Rhodes

A few hints regarding your assignments    Posted: Jan 7, 2008
I just wanted to take a minute to remind everyone that I grade for grammar, spelling and word choice. Be sure to proof read your assignment postings. Common mistakes I observed include: not capitalizing "I"; non-use of punctuation; mis-use of possession (students' vs. student's); there vs. their, etc. When you make mistakes in your writing, it takes away from your message and can make it appear as though you do not understand the materials. I thought I would just send this friendly warning before we got too far along in the quarter. Your first week discussion board postings were excellent! Many of you put a lot of thought into what you want to get out of the course and I appreciate that very much! It is my hope that your expectations are exceeded by what you will take away from this course. Welcome!

Use of discussion boards    Posted: Dec 17, 2007
Some helpful hints on using the Discussion Board: Once you click on the Discussion area link, there are several filter options at the top. Try using these to make your use of the discussion boards easier. For instance, if you click on the drop down for "Topics only" and change it to "topics and replies", then click on "update view", you will see EVERY discussion board posting and reply. I know that is probably overwhelming, so it is not my suggestion that you use it, I just wanted you to know that there are several filtering features that you can use. I do want to suggest that you be sure to click on a topic and not a reply when reponding to a particular topic. To keep things cleaner, you can also remove the RE: from the subject line before you start typing your posting. GROUP DISCUSSION BOARDS: I will start new discussion board posting for each team. If you choose to use them, they are available. I will not be checking them unless I have cause or a reason for doing so.
